Army officer held guilty of killing wife for dowry

ABOHAR: A court in Abohar, on Tuesday, sentenced an Army officer to life imprisonment for harassing and killing his wife for dowry. Captain Sandip Tomar, who belongs to Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh (UP), was posted in Abohar. Additional sessions judge Kuljit Pal Singh held Captain Tomar guilty of killing his wife Shweta Singh, subjecting her to cruelty and voluntarily causing grievous hurt. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him. However, Captain Tomar's mother Padma Tomar and father Mangal Singh Tomar were acquitted as the prosecution failed to establish their guilt.

The Abohar police filed a case against Captain Tomar and his family members on July 9, 2013 on the complaint his father-in-law Ram Naresh Singh, a resident of Ismail Gajipur area of Lucknow (UP). According to the complainant, he spent a great deal of money to arrange the wedding of his daughter Shweta and Captain Tomar on February 12, 2013. He also spent a lot of money to arrange dowry. But her husband and in-laws often taunted her for bringing lesser dowry than they expected. He said the family often subjected Shweta to physical violence and used abusive language. Ramesh Naresh said Shweta called him on July 8, 2013 and said her husband and in-laws were beating her up and the next day, she was found strangled. He said Captain Tomar and his family tried to establish that Shewta had committed suicide. He lodged a police complaint alleging that his daughter was murdered by her husband and in-laws over dowry. Shweta's autopsy report said she was poisoned before being strangulated. A case was registered against Captain Tomar, his father and mother. Captain Tomar was arrested on July 10, 2013.
