Army truck runs over woman in Pune

PUNE: A 26-year-old woman, who was on her way to pick up her five-year-old son from his school at Khadki, was run over by a military truck in front of the College of Military Engineering (CME) at Dapodion the Pune-Mumbai road at 11 am on Friday.

The Bhosari police said the woman, Vrushali Landge, was a resident of Kasarwadi. "We have booked the truck-driver. We will arrest him after he is produced before us on Saturday by the commander of his unit at the CME," said assistant inspector Ravikiran Darwade of the Bhosari police station.

Vrushali's son attends a pre-primary class at a private English medium school at Khadki, her brother-in-law Satish Landge said. His school timings are from 8am to 11am. "Vrushali would drop and pick him up on her scooter," he said.

The truck knocked Vrushali down just as the signal near CME had turned green. "The traffic police heard her scream as she came under the rear wheels of the truck. Her scooter was lying by the side of the road. The rear portion of the truck may have brushed against the scooter. The truck driver told us he did not notice the scooter behind him," Darwade said, adding that Vrushali's head was crushed under the wheels.

Vrushali's husband Sachin works with a private company.

In September 2012, a 40-year-old woman, Susan Kuriakose, of Ganeshkhind road, died on the spot after her scooter was hit by a speeding military truck on Aundh Road. Kuriakose was working as the personal assistant to the director of the Inter-university Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) at the University of Pune.

Army truck-civilian vehicle collision kills 6, triggers clashes in Srinagar

Ahmed Ali Fayyaz.

Clashes broke out between civilians and security personnel in Srinagar on Wednesday after six commuters were killed in a road accident involving an Army truck and a civilian vehicle in the outskirts of the Jammu and Kashmir capital.

Official sources told The Hindu that an Army recovery truck had collided head on with a Tavera on the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road near the Hokersar wetland reserve, about 10 km from Srinagar. According to witnesses, the deaths were caused by electrocution as livewires fell on the Tavera after the vehicles hit an electric pole after the collision. While four of the victims died on the spot, two others succumbed to injuries at hospital.

Five of the victims were identified as Mohammad Rafeeq Untoo of Dugliteng Baramulla, Ghulam Nabi Dar of Krankshivan Colony Sopore, the Tavera’s driver Ghulam Hassan Bhat of Dangarpora Baramulla, Naseer Ahmad Mir of Mohalla Momkak Sopore and Pir Mohammad Sayeed of Mohalla Ashpir Sopore. Sources said that two more passengers with critical injuries were battling for life at hospital.

Minutes after the accident, a large crowd of the civilians gathered at the spot. While alleging that the Army driver had hit the Tavera “in rage”, they shouted slogans against the Army and resorted to intense stone-pelting. The Army fired in air but the crowds dispersed only after a police party reached the spot and used baton charge and tear gas. Some of the residents, claiming to be the eyewitnesses, said that two or three people died in the Army’s firing. However, officials maintained that all the six died in the accident. They insisted that none of the dead or injured had gunshot wounds.

FIR filed

A police spokesman said: “An FIR has been registered at the Parimpora Police Station and investigation into the matter has been taken up. The vehicle has been seized and the driver of the Army vehicle has been arrested.”

Protests erupt after Indian Army truck hits civilian car

Syed Imran Ali Hamdani.

SRINAGAR: Protests erupted on the busy Hyder Pora square Wednesday when a speeding Army truck hit a civilian car. Police used force to quell protesters on the junction where highway intersects with the high- security Airport Road.

Witnesses said the silver color Maruti 800 was heading towards Airport when the armored truck jumped the red signal and sped towards the other side.

The civilian driver was taken by surprise as he saw the army vehicle heading towards the car. Witnesses alleged that after hitting the car Army personnel came down from the vehicle and started abusing the civilian.

Finding the victim in trouble, bystanders came to his rescue and started raising pro-freedom and pro-Islam slogans. As police reached the spot, witnesses said Army vehicle tried to flee.  “But people resisted asking police to register case against the Army. On this Army men trained guns on us,” said a protester asking not to be identified. On this police overpowered the protesters by thrashing them.

When contacted a police official said no case was registered. “Basically the two parties resolved the  matter amicably as the car owner was given compensation for losses,” he said.

Army vehicles are often accused of jumping red signals. Reports reveal that on August 19, 2013, a cavalcade of some top Army officials jumped the red signal at nearby Rawal Pora square.   The Army cavalcade escorting three black Ambassador cars went conspicuous for declining to halt for their turn as they rushed ahead straight.

On the other hand to facilitate smooth movement of Army vehicles, the Traffic police often puts electronic signal system on blinker mode at junctions along the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad highway.

These are complaints against Army in the City where Chief Minister Omer Abdullah is seen adhering to traffic signals.
