Army ammo found in garbage bin

Aftab Khan.

Two live hand grenades and 27 rounds of sophisticated assault rifles were found dumped in a garbage bin in Deolali cantonment of Nashik district on Saturday afternoon. The bullets found were 21 rounds of INSAS rifles, five rounds of AK-47 rifles and one round of MMG rifle.

Assistant commissioner of Police, Hemraj-singh Rajput, said that the ammunition was meant for Army supply. “How it got there is under investigations. We have contacted the Army and will send our report,” Mr Rajput told this newspaper.

The plastic bag containing the ammunition dumped in the garbage bin was found by the cantonment sanitation workers, who then informed the police. A bomb disposal squad arrived and def-used one grenade. The other was too rusty, so they decided to take it to the Army area to defuse it.

Cases have not been registered at the time of going to the press and no arrests have been made. Further investigations are on.

The garbage bin in which the ammunition was found is located near Samarth Society where 60 families of Armymen reside.
