The Summary Court Martial presided over by a Colonel tried the jawan belonging to an Army Aviation Squadron for "using criminal force to a woman with the intent to outrage her (Captain-rank officer) modesty," sources told PTI here today.
The Summary Court Martial in its order has sentenced the jawan to undergo "rigorous imprisonment for six months and be dismissed from service," they said.
The incident happened in the premises of the unit's residential area for officers in Bangalore.
The lady officer was returning to the residential area at 11:45 PM when the jawan accosted her and allegedly "used criminal force to the lady Captain of the same Squadron, by grabbing her left upper arm and forcing himself upon her intending thereby to outrage her modesty".
The jawan approached the Chief of Army Staff's office against the decision of the Summary Court Martial, which was presided over by the Commanding Officer of the unit, but it was rejected.
Denying any kind of wrongdoing on his part, the jawan also approached a military court against the punishment awarded to him but there also the sentence of dismissal from service was affirmed.
In the last few years, there have been several cases of clashes between officers and jawans but this is probably the first time a jawan has been accused and punished for allegedly molesting a lady officer.
The number of lady officers in the force has been growing steadily in the recent past with their number reaching 1,072 last year.
