Jawan kills wife in Manipur

Barely 10 days after a woman was brutally hacked to death in her paddy field at Yairipok in Thoubal district, a 25-year-old woman was allegedly beaten to death by her husband and in-laws in Naranseina village on the bank of Loktak lake in Bishnupur district. The victim's husband, M Suraj Singh, works with the Territorial Army and is currently posted at the headquarters of the 57 Mountain Division in Leimakhong, near Imphal.

Singh, along with his parents M Joykumar Singh and mother Borni Devi, is accused of beating his wife Sandhyarani to death at their residence on Sunday afternoon. Sandhyarani's body was allegedly dumped in a canal behind their residence, said her mother Memcha Devi on Monday.

Bruises were found on Sandhyarani's face, forehead, neck and legs, the mother said and added that Suraj would frequently beat her daughter. "Unable to bear the torture, my daughter stayed with us for 10 days last month," she added.

Irate locals formed a Joint Action Committee and demanded that Suraj be arrested. Police said they are trying to arrest him after contacting officials of his unit. The JAC has submitted a complaint to police, seeking action against Suraj and his parents. Though an autopsy was conducted at RIMS here, the JAC has not taken the body to protest against police's failure to arrest Suraj.
