Army truck runs over woman in Pune

PUNE: A 26-year-old woman, who was on her way to pick up her five-year-old son from his school at Khadki, was run over by a military truck in front of the College of Military Engineering (CME) at Dapodion the Pune-Mumbai road at 11 am on Friday.

The Bhosari police said the woman, Vrushali Landge, was a resident of Kasarwadi. "We have booked the truck-driver. We will arrest him after he is produced before us on Saturday by the commander of his unit at the CME," said assistant inspector Ravikiran Darwade of the Bhosari police station.

Vrushali's son attends a pre-primary class at a private English medium school at Khadki, her brother-in-law Satish Landge said. His school timings are from 8am to 11am. "Vrushali would drop and pick him up on her scooter," he said.

The truck knocked Vrushali down just as the signal near CME had turned green. "The traffic police heard her scream as she came under the rear wheels of the truck. Her scooter was lying by the side of the road. The rear portion of the truck may have brushed against the scooter. The truck driver told us he did not notice the scooter behind him," Darwade said, adding that Vrushali's head was crushed under the wheels.

Vrushali's husband Sachin works with a private company.

In September 2012, a 40-year-old woman, Susan Kuriakose, of Ganeshkhind road, died on the spot after her scooter was hit by a speeding military truck on Aundh Road. Kuriakose was working as the personal assistant to the director of the Inter-university Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) at the University of Pune.
