Police directed to book Army’s chief engineer for 'dereliction of duty'

A senior government official Saturday directed the police in Kashmir to register a case against the chief engineer and a senior Army official for dereliction of duty.

Taking note of dilapidated conditions of Drabshalla – Kandni stretch of the highway in the hilly Kishtwar district, District Commissioner (Kishtwar), Baseer Ahmed Khan, directed the concerned station house officer to lodge an FIR against Chief Engineer BEACON c/o 56 APO and CO, GREF Kishtwar, for ‘non-compliance of directions and dereliction of duty’.

The order issued by the office of Kishtwar DC states that due to bad condition of the road, people of adjoining areas are suffering which forces them to hold frequent protest demonstrations, thus posing a law and order problem for the administration.

“Time and again GREF authorities were asked to improve this road and also install side barriers from Kandni to Drabshalla. But no effort was made on their part. As a result of this, public is ventilating serious  concern and the constant apprehension of traffic accidents is increasing day by day as the condition of road has worsened,” the order states.

The GREF claimed the work on the stretch was allotted but the contractor was not executing it, “Thus we sought intervention from District Administration in this regard. Although the GREF can take strict action against the contractor by invoking relevant clauses of contract agreement, but they have not done that,” it said.

“In wake of this situation and keeping the interest and safety of public in mind, the DC has directed the concerned SHO to lodge an FIR against the Chief Engineer BECON c/o 56 APO and OC GREF Kishtwar in this regard clearly mentioning that in case of any mishap or accident on said stretch, the responsibility will be fixed on GREF authorities,” KNS news agency reported.
